Vincent Van Gogh... and Nancy Nemhauser
AN INCREDIBLE & INSPIRING STORY Mount Dora, Florida. USA In 2017, autism, Van Gogh's "Starry Night", freedom of expression, and a mother’s unwavering love for her son, turned a small town into a gigantic story that attracted international media and thousands of people from all around the world.
It started when Nancy Nemhauser hired a local artist to paint a mural of Van Gogh’s "Starry Night" on the exterior wall of their home. Nancy’s autistic son Chip, loves Van Gogh, so the mural would be an easy marker to help him find his way home if he ever got lost again, as had happened before.
Citing a small sign code violation, the city sued, imposed a daily fine and placed a lien on their home. Risking everything, the family fought all the way to federal court under the banner of freedom of expression and the First Amendment.
